Centering Care & Men’s Roles in Caregiving
Key Questions
- What does caregiving mean for men and women in India?
- What factors influence men’s participation in caregiving in India?
- How can gender and masculinities be integrated into the discourse on care, caregiving, and the care economy?
The State of the World’s Fathers 2023 report by Equimundo underscored the need for men and boys to value and share caregiving responsibilities while advocating for equitable policies.
Building on this, the International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW) and Equimundo, supported by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, conducted a qualitative study in India to explore caregiving dynamics and the factors shaping men’s involvement.
The study combined a quantitative survey of 830 participants (both men & women) across five states, with 13 in-person focus groups and 12 interviews across four states.
Findings reveal that caregiving remains deeply influenced by gender norms, with men primarily associating their role with financial provision while women continue to bear the majority of household responsibilities.
However, shifting attitudes suggest increasing acceptance of men’s involvement in caregiving, presenting an opportunity to challenge traditional norms.
