Morisika [Mirage] : The Story of the Boatman’ is an attempt to explore stories of 3 communities living by the Brahmaputra river in Assam through a feature length documentary film, three episodes and a multimedia archive of additional material. It is a collaboration between film makers, photographers, folk artists and local riverine communities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The pilot project has worked with three communities in Upper, Central and Lower Assam, working with pastoralists in chars (shifting sandbanks) who work with buffalos, fishing villages on the banks of the river, and folk music and theater from syncretic communities. The work will record memories steeped in tradition, culture and knowledge systems and create a biography of the Brahmaputra river. This exercise includes riverine communities who have lived along the river and passed down lore, cultural traditions, music and oral histories, which often provide insights about the river ecology and systems. This endeavor is also a response to the changing conditions of the Assam landscape, as soil erosion, deforestation, dams and flooding are harming the landscape at an alarming rate.
