Access to justice

The India Justice Report is an endeavour that ranks the capacity of states to deliver justice via the police, judiciary, prisons and legal aid. It is the effort of numerous organisations working to improve the justice system. It uses government data to assess the budgets, infrastructure, human resources, workloads, diversity and 5 year trends of police, prisons, judiciary and legal aid in each state, against its own declared standards. Some aspects drill down on police force training, diversity in police staff, pending court cases, and undertrial prisoners. This work is done in partnership between Centre for Social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative(CHRI), DAKSH, TISS-Prayas and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.

Why are they the right choice for others:

  • Analyse the contemporary architecture of justice in India based on its own declared standard to support the necessity of public institutions
  • Bringing a data driven scientific approach to this study of justice in order to understand quality, rather than an editorial perspective
  • Reinforcing the idea of the justice system as a universal public good for the population and the duty of the government to provide an accessible, affordable and responsive justice system
