Knowing our roots

A national education institution that focuses on human settlements’ just, sustainable and efficient transformation. It does so through the creation and application of knowledge to ensure equality.
IIHS is a national educational institution that focuses on creating research and knowledge to deal with urbanisation in India in the 21st century, and to transform the nature of urban education through interdisciplinary research focused on practice. IIHS works on creating a generation of practitioners and scholars who will have the knowledge, skills and perspectives to respond to the needs of nearly 800 Indians who will live in cities by the middle of the century. It is focused on creating the new knowledge needed to find solutions to transform the everyday lives of people with such large scale urbanisation.
