Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives Trust (AALI)

Current Grantee |

AALI envisions an egalitarian social system that recognises women as complete individuals and equal human beings through advocacy for women’s human rights, rooted in the United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). They undertake research, activism, and director response around issues of violence against women and the right to choice and decision-making in relationships. It is a women-led organisation committed to protecting women’s rights and marginalised communities, with a field presence in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Bihar. It provides technical support to women’s groups and organisations across India. AALI believes that the law is a site for change and a tool for social justice. They work through active citizenship, access to justice, and addressing knowledge gaps. Their work includes providing legal support and acting as a resource centre for individuals and other collectives and organisations, creating and disseminating material related to women’s rights and issues, conducting fact-finding missions and legal research on the right to sexual autonomy, and providing legal and other support to women who have experienced abuse.

Why they are the right choice for others:

  • Work in collaboration with state and non-state actors — including the judiciary, administration, not for profits and civil society organisations and movements — to focus on women’s rights, access to justice and gender-focused law and policy
  • Working to amplify the knowledge, work and realities of grassroots experiences of women to the national stage
  • Using a rights framework and rule of law to think about rights-based issues for women.
