Key Questions

  1. What does data on accelerated climate change and biodiversity loss tell us? What challenges & the opportunities does this present for domestic philanthropy?

  2. From exploring water and conservation-related issues in depth to driving systemic action on climate change, how has Rohini Nilekani and RNP’s journey embraced a learning-driven and integrated approach to develop its oldest and most expansive portfolio to date?

  3. What are our learnings from understanding our partners’ work in conservation & biodiversity, and how do we plan to build our work in climate resilience and adaptation?

“We need a broader lens through which to understand the connections between conservation, climate change and development. Even in the Anthropocene, ‘humans first’ cannot be realised without keeping biodiversity at the heart of the debate. How can we together unleash a new creativity to redefine human flourishing?”

Rohini Nilekani, Chairperson, Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies (RNP)

The Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies’ Climate & Environment Portfolio is focused on the twin goals of building the adaptive capacities of communities to make them more climate resilient, and nourish and conserve our biodiversity to enhance the ecosystem’s resilience.

In our quest for a people and planet-friendly society, we focus on funding programmes that balance speed and scale with long term systemic outcomes. We support the creation of public goods through research and capacity building.

At the heart of this approach lies a recognition that we are only as strong as the communities of practice that we build. Our endeavour is to enable collaborations by fostering platforms and coalitions, while mobilizing domestic philanthropy for greater impact.

Adjacently, our grantmaking approach also leverages the power of storytelling to influence attitudinal and behavioral change.
